I took my Onkyo amplifier to John to repair. There was no written or official quote. He demanded an up front fee of £140 to assess it (to cover 4 hours). After a week I’d heard nothing and realised he’d not given me a receipt of goods. After trying to get hold of him for 2 weeks, he told me ‘he’d get to it when he can!’. Then suddenly, he advised he had looked at it and needed more time to work out what the problem was. In the 4 hours he’d charged me for, he could not tell me anything about it, except it could be a transistor ‘at the base, which he hadn’t got to’ yet ( in 4 hrs?!). He’d not isolated them to test that theory though and he muttered something about powder solder! He told me he would need more time and money to investigate further. It was all very vague and suspicious so I collected it. Total waste of money!! Can’t decide if he’s totally incompetent, a con artist, or just odd. (think all of above!) Steer well clear!

Does not even deserve a one star.
Came 15 mins late could not fix sound problem on Tv even after he left 2 hours later the sound got worse, yet charged a £50 call out which he did not specify then £35 an hour yet did not solve problem. What a rip-off.
I have called him back demanding money back but he has not after 3 days had the decency to reply to voice message, as he does not answer phone, can understand why.

Am definitely taking this further.

We had a pretty unpleasant experience with John Smith of St Albans when he came round to fix our television. Half an hour or so into the repair, my mum asked John if he could tell us how much the repair would cost roughly and he launched into a rant about how he couldn't predict the future amongst other irrelevant remarks. His manner was unpleasant and it made us uncomfortable. Still, we made amends and let him carry on. After an hour and a half, John still hadn't managed to fix the tv and he told us he could go further but it would cost yet more money. He drew up a bill for £150 including call out fee, labour and parts and when my mum contested £50 for parts (as the television was still broken) he made her feel too uncomfortable to not pay the full amount. And so I would discourage people from using John as he was quite unpleasant, rather expensive and didn't manage to fix our tv.
