Touchstone Lofts Solihull Reviews

I am writing this review to express my dissatisfaction with the services provided by Touchstone Lofts. Unfortunately, my experience with this company was nothing short of disappointing. First and foremost, the work they performed for me was of extremely poor quality. I had high expectations for the loft conversion project I hired them for, but the results were far from satisfactory. The craftsmanship was shoddy, and it was evident that corners were cut at every juncture. This lack of attention to detail was apparent in every aspect of the work, from the subpar materials used to the haphazard finishing touches. Moreover, I found the project to be far more costly than initially anticipated. Touchstone Lofts provided me with an estimate at the outset, but as the work progressed, the costs continued to escalate. This was incredibly frustrating and left me feeling deceived and taken advantage of. It is clear that the company does not prioritize transparency in their financial dealings with customers. To make matters worse, the project also ran significantly over budget. I had set a specific budget for the loft conversion, but Touchstone Lofts exceeded that amount by a considerable margin. This not only put me in a difficult financial situation but also left me questioning the integrity of the company. Their failure to adhere to the agreed-upon budget demonstrates a lack of professionalism and accountability. Overall, I regret ever hiring Touchstone Lofts for my loft conversion project. The poor quality of work, the unexpected and exorbitant costs, and the failure to stay within the agreed-upon budget have left a bitter taste in my mouth. I strongly caution others against engaging with this company, as their dubious company setup and lacklustre performance make them an unreliable choice for any construction work. I hope that sharing my experience will serve as a warning to others, helping them avoid the frustrations and disappointments I encountered with Touchstone Lofts.

When it comes to construction projects, safety should be a top priority. It's unfortunate to experience that Touchstone Lofts did not think this was relevant in our case. This can put us and our family at risk of injury, accidents, or other negative outcomes.
When we raised the issues with Paul, he was dismissive. We have the right to expect a safe work environment and Paul, the manager at Touchstone has a responsibility to ensure that they are following the proper safety protocols.
Any company that doesn't take health and safety seriously is not to be trusted, this is one of them. We learnt it's essential to find a reputable company with a strong track record of compliance with proper safety protocols, and in hindsight we should have done more background checks on this company before we signed anything. If we had done this, then we would have felt more confident our project was being handled safely and professionally. We are extremely disappointed.

With the recent heavy downpours we can now see how poor the workmanship is. We have water coming through the ceiling light fittings, and the VELUX window is leaking around the sides. I attempted to call Touchstone Lofts so they can rectify, but could not have been more disinterested. I was promised a call back, but nothing. After constant calling and emailing I eventually got a response, but they blamed wear and tear and would not fix the issues. Our loft was only completed six months ago so should be covered under their Home Improvement Guarantee, but that is not the case. I'm incredibly disappointed with this company, their attitude, and complete lack of professionalism.

I recently availed services from Touchstone Lofts, and regrettably, my experience was significantly unsatisfactory on many fronts.I'd like to start by expressing my discontent with their payment procedures. The director, Paul, insisted on cash payments or direct payments to their tradespeople. Such practices seemed quite unconventional and introduced several complexities. The most bothersome issue was that after making these direct payments, he claimed those transactions never occurred and attempted to charge me again, leading to an ordeal of confusion and frustration.Additionally, Paul's response to the dispute was threatening with legal action and involving debt recovery services. It was rather alarming and created an unnecessarily hostile environment that exacerbated the already stressful circumstances.Regrettably, the workmanship left much to be desired. We experienced numerous delays throughout the project, with an unpredictable schedule as they would randomly turn up on unconfirmed days. Moreover, the administration aspect was noticeably lacking. There was a blatant disregard for the concept of customer focus, which made the experience even more challenging. Organizational skills were gravely lacking, and this reflected negatively on the delivery of the service. In conclusion, my experiences with Touchstone Lofts were overwhelmingly negative due to their unprofessional behaviour, irregular work schedule, and subpar craftsmanship. The customer experience was far from satisfactory, and I urge potential clients to carefully consider these aspects before deciding to engage with this company.

11 reasons why we will never use Touchstone Lofts again.

1) Our original quote was £55,000 for the loft conversion. The reality after inflated charges for minor amendments and hidden costs are added (e.g tin hat), is closer to £80,000. This excludes any decorating, furnishing etc. When the project is completely finished it will easily touch the £100,000 figure.

2) We've paid over £10,000 to have our roof made watertight by another company and over £1500 for reports from British Lead and a Chartered Building Surveyor, to prove that the building plans were not followed correctly by the contractor and that the quality of the work indicates, that the contractor lacked the training/skill to undertake the work.

3) We've been asked for £4,000 for work that was not completed, to terminate the contract early. When asked to itemise this, Touchstone said, "As per the terms of the agreement we don't provide itemised bills and neither does the contractor." We asked where in the contract it said this, but this information was not provided.

4) We paid Touchstone a £1000 building control fee back in Nov 2021. Building control has still not been paid by Touchstone Lofts.

5) After our building plans were approved, Touchstone Lofts asked us for an additional 10-20% in cash, to get one of their building contractors to accept the job. Touchstone Lofts do not have their own in-house builders, they outsource your project build!

7) Touchstone Lofts enters you into a "tripartite contract" and takes no responsibility for the work/actions of the building contractor they choose for you.

8) Your guarantee is with the building contractor, not Touchstone Lofts. If the contractor goes under or leaves the country, your guarantee goes with it.

9) The brochure, quote and contract reference/display logos from Master of Master Craftsmen, Federation of Master Builders. However, Touchstone is not a member of these organisations. When highlighting to senior management that this was breaking the Misrepresentation Act 1967, we were told that this was just a "silly clerical error".

10) The project is split into 10 payment stages. You have to pay Touchstone on every payment stage, with the rest going to the building contractor. After paying Touchstone their final payment, their attitude towards our project took a downward spiral.

11) Touchstone Lofts selectively decide when something in the contract was binding. This selectiveness always tended to be in their favour e.g. the contract includes 2x radiators, but the builder said this was a typo, even though the typo was in multiple places. No radiators were refunded

We had problems virtually from day one with Touchstone Lofts Ltd. Once deposit is paid the attitude of the owner changed and became money focused, customer service became an afterthought. Months after work was completed we had battles to get sign off documents and contacted the FMB. On reflection could have employed the same sub-contractors he used. You have been warned, tread very carefully with this company. Review amended on 21/12/2022 to address comments made by Touchstone Lofts in reply to my review. It was stated that ' This customer did not pay most of his contractual payments on time ' and also ' Not getting paid on time, writing cheques to a window company, recalled payments and delays in payments obviously made us conscious to be careful about being paid for the job 'this is not true as payment schedule in the contract did not state payment dates so therefore impossible for payments not to be made on time. When payments where requested they where paid straight away, one payment was slightly delayed due to one of his employees accepting a cheque as correct when in fact a small error was made on the company name, as soon as I was made aware of this I did a bank transfer to get payment to them ASAP even though the contract quite clearly states cheques only. The evening the cheque was written error we received calls from the company owner which is way over the top for a small error on the cheque. Abbey Bank recalled another payment at a later date as they could not verify recipient and therefore suspected it could be a fraudulent transaction. Abbey provided me with a senior managers direct contact details so that I could pass these onto Touchstone Lofts so that they could confirm that the payment was valid and they could ' fast pay 'it, Touchstone Lofts would not call them thus the payment had to go through the normal 3 or 4 day clearing system. It was stated that ' He had additional electrical and tiling works done but refused to pay the extra costs but wanted his certification.' This can not be true as contract quite clearly states that no additional work will be carried out without confirmation in writing, we neither asked for or was any additional work done. It was stated that ' This customer also changed his mind about the location of four Velux windows and these were re-sited with no extra charge ' Not sure why this has been raised by Touchstone Lofts as an issue as their website quotes ' Once floor is down customer can view loft area to make any final layout changes 'which is exactly what we did. It was stated that ' We were then promised full payment if we finished on time which we did and on budget but he refused to pay and questioned our VAT status 'We paid net amount under advice from Customs and Excise as work had been done so we should pay for it, what we must not do is pay VAT to someone who potentially is charging VAT but is not registered to do so. Touchstone Lofts could not provide a valid VAT number and kept coming up with different numbers all of which were nothing to do with the business called Touchstone Lofts Ltd. The final payment was not late, and I am happy to provide any reader of this proof of this along with a copy of the FINAL INVOICE. We also made the net payment because we are fair people and are happy to pay for something we had, what I am not prepared to do is pay someone that can not provide a legal vat invoice the VAT. The so called invoice we were given had no sequential invoice number, no registered company address, invalid VAT number, no VAT breakdown, all things which are legal requirements. I had every right to withhold full payment until they could provide a legal invoice, but I did not I paid the net amount so they were not out of pocket. Any reader wanting written proof or copies of details stated above please feel free to contact me.
