Neil Pope (Np Smallworks) was contracted to skim over artex on several walls and ceilings in our house. Firstly he delayed for 9 days shortly before the job was due to commence. When he finally began on Wed 4 October 2017, he proceeded to work at an extremely slow rate. At the end of the second day (5 Oct) he walked out the door just before 5pm without a word (I was elsewhere in the house). He had not completed the agreed-to work for the day. He had failed to protect the floor and there was plaster all over our wooden floorboards, hearth, windowsills and other surfaces. He had poured waste plaster from his bucket into plant bedding in the garden. He had used the wrong type of plaster for a house of this age. He had failed to use beading on the edges of walls. He had smeared plaster beyond the areas to be plastered onto, cornicing etc.
It took over 2 hours for Neil Pope to respond to texts and phone calls to him that evening of 5 October before he responded. He said he would be back in the morning for a short while and would then finish the walls the following Tuesday, and he now 'didn't know' when he'd be able to plaster the ceilings as he had 'another job' he needed to get to. In the circumstances I had no choice but to tell him to come back in the morning and collect his tools, and not return.
Neil Pope caused a great deal of mess, distress, inconvenience and damaged our home, failed to complete the work he was contracted to do in the time agreed and the partial work he did manage was not up to an acceptable standard. He had received an upfront payment of £244 from us, the rest upon completion which he will not receive. It took me many hours to clean our house to a reasonable standard. Floorboards and the hearth have been damaged and will require repair.
I have now hired another plasterer to rectify the damage caused by Neil Pope and complete the work required. I have also written to Trading Standards.
